Events as part of the ongoing study 'Understanding the nature, forms and implications of structural violence against rural women in the context of agrarian distress

SOPPECOM is currently engaged in the study 'Understanding structural violence against rural women in the context of agrarian distress'. The study is done in the states of Maharashtra, Telangana and Punjab. The study was done in eight districts across three states using a mixed methods approach. Around 3500 women participated in the quantitative study. The study explored violence in a broader sense encompassing denial of rights and entitlements, inaccessibility to services, loss of livelihoods, lack of work opportunities for families including young people, harassment at home and work sites, economic exploitation in wages, distress experienced due to land acquisition, displacement and resettlement, and discriminatory practices towards widowed and single women.

Following events are planned for dissemination of the findings of this study:

In collaboration with Mahila Kisan Adhikar Manch (MAKAAM) and Department of Women and Gender Studies, Savitribai Phule Pune Univeristy

The workshop aims to bring together members of academia and civil society across Maharashtra to discuss issues around various forms of violence faced by women farmers, implementation of Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013 and its implications for agriculture and other unorganised sectors.

Towards Brown Gold Reimagining off-grid sanitation in rapidly urbanising areas in Asia and Africa.

Towards Brown Gold is a study across five sites in Asia and Africa to understand the off-grid sanitation question. The project duration is from 1st August 2020 to 31st August 2023, with an extension till September 2024. GCRF-UKRI funds the Project.

SOPPECOM's role is to look at marginality and gender in the city of Nanded Waghala. Nanded was chosen as it was cited as the best example of a Community-led total sanitation (CLTS) programme in Maharashtra. Institute of Development Studies (IDS) had done a study of that project when CLTS was being implemented. Thus, this project would allow us to revisit the city and its sanitation.

Dissemination workshop on the findings of the study:

August 2024, Nanded city

In August 2024, a workshop will be held in Nanded City to disseminate the findings of a study on sanitation and marginality within the Nanded Waghala Municipal Corporation. This event will bring together residents, sanitation workers, and government officials to discuss the research and facilitate government action to resolve the issues identified. The goal is to achieve a clear understanding of the sanitation challenges faced by marginalized communities and to enhance government commitment to addressing these issues.

Final Project Workshop to finalize the write ups based on the comparative findings from the study conducted across five sites in Asia and Africa

Workshop hosted by IDS

15th to 22nd September 2024, Sussex and Brighton, UK

The project focuses on exploring the circular economy of waste and addressing sanitation challenges in urban and peri-urban areas across Asia and Africa. Researchers across multiple study sites are currently preparing writings and publications based on comparative findings. The upcoming workshop aims to synthesize and finalize these insights, ensuring a comprehensive analysis that reflects diverse contexts and emerging themes from the study areas. Researchers and collaborators from all sites will convene to discuss results, share perspectives, and integrate feedback. The goal is to produce cohesive and actionable reports and writings that can inform policy and practice to improve sanitation and address issues of marginality in the regions under study.

Identify and build capacities of women leaders amongst cane cutters for feminist organising for their rights

SOPPECOM, as the secretariat of MAKAAM, has been actively working on the issues of women cane cutters since 2019 in various capacities. Initially, SOPPECOM started working in 30 villages of Beed district, supported by the Women's Fund for Asia. The major objective was to identify and build the capacities of 30 women leaders among sugarcane cutters from three talukas of Beed District, to mobilize women cane cutters, and to lead awareness-building at the district level for their rights, with the long-term goal of creating collectives of women sugarcane cutters in Maharashtra.

The program entered its second phase in January 2022, expanding to include Hingoli district. Currently, the work is being implemented in a total of 80 villages (10 villages from each taluka, four talukas from each district) across Beed and Hingoli. Various events are planned over the next three months to advance above mentioned objective.

  A State Level Consultation

In collaboration with other networks and organizations working on issues of cane cutters

August 24, Pune city

This state-level consultation is being organized in response to the recent (2023) increase in wage rates for cane cutters declared by the Sugarcane Federation. Fieldwork has shown that advances are being settled against old wage rates in some places and new wage rates in others. Women cane cutters want their advances to be settled according to the new wage rate. To address this issue and other pressing concerns, such as expanding and accelerating the registration process of cane cutters across Maharashtra, SOPPECOM plans to organize a state-level consultation in collaboration with other networks and organizations working on cane cutter issues. This event will include representatives from the Sugarcane Federation and the government, with the objective of facilitating and expediting the process of ensuring rights and recognition for women cane cutters.
